BACKGROUND
Founded in 1972 in West Virginia, catering to experiential education, TMI became an international organization in 1987 when it helped to create new protected in Nepal. And in Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Its mission is to conserve high priority mountain ecosystem, improve livelihoods, and promote the well being of mountain people and mountain culture through applied research, outreach and education. In Nepal, more than a dozen projects have been initiated so far. Local partners with increased capacity are now operating programs in agriculture, traditional weaving, community development, forestry, and tourism.

Past activities related to sustainable tourism
-Implemented a comprehensive eco-tourism program in Makalu- Barun by improving local trials and bridges, strengthening management skills of local people, developing promotional materials, improving lodge condition.
-Earnings from tourism products (weaving and handicraft production from allo) tripled- over half the income now goes to 600 allos weavers organize in 15 production clubs in Sankhuwasabha.
-Developed community-based eco-tourism plans for Langtang National Park and Helambu Buffer zone.
-Build capacity of village organizations and national park staff to plan, manage and monitor community-based eco-tourism.

Sankhuwasabha and Solukhumbu Districts: Kima thanka, Chepuwa, Hatiya, Pathibara, Makalu,Yaphu, Mangtewa, Tamkhu, Bala, Sisuwa, Bung, Cheskam, Dudh kunda and Salpa pokhari.

Langtang National Park and Buffer zone: Sing Gompa, Langtang village, Kutumsang, Shermathang, Tarkegyang Melamchigyang, Helambu, Gosaikunda.
